In the stress of the pre-holiday get-it-done work crunch, I've been taken by some beltworthy rock ballads - and I never really thought about it before, but rock is rife with dreaming, fantasy, and myth. It's pretty glorious. To wit:
Kansas (Carry On Wayward Son):
"...Though my eyes could see I still was a blind man
Though my mind could think I still was a mad man
I hear the voices when I'm dreaming
I can hear them say:
Carry on my wayward son ..."
Boston (More Than A Feeling):
"...I lost myself in a familiar song
I closed my eyes and I slipped away
Its more than a feeling, when I hear that old song they used to play
(more than a feeling)
I begin dreaming
(more than a feeling)
till I see Marianne walk away …"
REO Speedwagon (In My Dreams):
"If only I could stay asleep, at least I could pretend you're thinkin' of me
cause nighttime is the one time I am happy, you see, in my dreams
We climb and climb and at the top we fly
Let the world go on below us, we are lost in time
And I don't know really what it means
All I know is that you love me, in my dreams"
Pat Benatar (We Belong):
"Close your eyes and try to sleep now
Close your eyes and try to dream
Clear your mind and do your best
To try and wash the palette clean …"
